Attunements: Bright Lilim of Trade
Rachab's existence isn't precisely secret, just ...
downplayed a bit.
It's fairly well known that Marc has Bright Lilim
working for him. Many Archangels do: admittedly, none
have very many, but Trade has always provided a
congenial working environment for a Gifter. It's
somewhat less known that some Bright Lilim rise high
in Marc's service. This raises no eyebrows, either,
for essentially the same reason as above. A few
individuals even remember seeing a Gifter serving as
Marc's personal secretary, now and again. What of it?
What almost nobody realizes is that said secretary
sits in on everything Marc does, from his strategic
economic planning to his oversight of Heaven's
intelligence service. She sits, watches and takes
copious notes. Every so often, she asks a question,
which is always answered. Rachab has access to
everything Trade owns or knows ... and her credit
account has no upper limit.
None of this is widely known because ... well, once
you hit the level of Friend in Trade's organization,
you don't get to leave with your memories intact
anyway. Your chances of successfully Falling
officially become nil, too: the Order of the Eternal
Sword is routinely delegated to resolve the status of
Trade's high-ranking defectors. As a result, it's not
impossible to keep a secret restricted to Marc's
immediate subordinates and Racheb's privileged
status as a student and protege is very much on a
need-to-know basis.
It's difficult to understand why, of course: the
Gifter has no Word, no Distinctions, no extra
Attunements or even a regular vessel ... but she still
has access to Marc's ear, should she need it. She
usually doesn't: those who know her mostly come away
with the impression of a very sweet, very bright and
very rushed person franticly attempting to digest
large chunks of information as quickly as possible.
Rachab is the sort of entity that gives the impression
that she wears glasses and sensible shoes, even when
she actually isn't.
Only two entities know the precise details of Rachab's
creation, and neither one is Lilith. This concerned
her, of course, but the Princess of Freedom has
managed to confirm to her own satisfaction that the
Gifter ultimately came from Freedom, just like all the
others. Lilith suspects that Rachab was probably
reconstructed from a Remnant Bright Lilim (the usual
explanation for anomalies of this type): at this
point, the Princess frankly lost interest. Rachab
never leaves Heaven, anyway - indeed, she almost never
leaves the Bazaar - so sitting her down and explaining
alternate options (for a small fee, of course) was
currently impossible. Lilith has more important
things to worry about - and Rachab barely tracks on
the rest of Hell's mental radar.
Still, the lack of hard evidence about Rachab's
previous existence is odd. Unfortunately, the
Archangelic expert on the s u b ject of Remnant and
soul-killed Bright Lilim is Marc himself, and he has
always been tight-lipped of what his personal
investigations in this s u b ject have revealed. It's
been suggested that he restored Rachab to help him in
this research: it is known that a Bright Lilim
accompanied Marc on some of his early field research
of places where Gifters have been soul-killed. She
hasn't done that in a while, however. Those
(extremely few) in a position to judge the situation
mostly shrug and assume that Rachab is nowadays simply
one of the fairer ornaments in Trade's collection.
That explains a lot about any incongruities, really.
After all, Marc has always been quite the collector.
