June 16, 2017: Updating The Updates

This GURPS News installment is special for two reasons:

  1. It marks the transition from quarterly to monthly updates, just because we think GURPS fans would appreciate that. (Also: Quarters are for accountants.)
  2. It's the first update to go out by email as well as be posted to the website. We used to inform GURPS fans by email ages ago, so depending on when you got into GURPS, this idea will seem either very new or very old.

Doing things this way should make it a lot easier to keep tabs on what's going on with GURPS.

Since this is a special update, we're going to change the format just a little. However, the GURPS News will remain a hotline from my virtual desk to yours. That means it's about as official as this kind of thing gets -- but also informal, because editors gotta editorialize!

Recent Releases

Newsletters are supposed to tell you what's new. Since this one is going through a renewal and some readers are joining us for the first time by email, let's set the clock back to the start of 2017. That way, everybody will be on the same page next month.

Pyramid: Dungeon Fantasy Collected (January 5, 2017; PDF)

This special 165-page Pyramid issue bundles together 28 of the best articles written for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy. It delivers more of everything: templates, power-ups, monsters, treasures, adventures . . . Because delvers can never have enough stuff!

GURPS Classic: Autoduel (First Edition) (January 12, 2017; PDF)

Originally released as a softback in 1986, this is a classic in the truest sense, adapting the world of Car Wars to GURPS First Edition. The vehicles and weapons might be a little tricky to convert to GURPS Fourth Edition, but the setting remains as cool as ever.

Pyramid #3/99: Death and Beyond (January 19, 2017; PDF)

Death can be the end, but it doesn't need to be the end of a campaign. It might even be a new beginning. It certainly doesn't have to be boring! This issue looks at ways to give death a bigger role in your game than simply "something to avoid at all costs."

Pyramid #3/100: Pyramid Secrets (February 16, 2017; PDF)

This is our "black album," the one to get if you're just getting into Pyramid and want a look at its versatility. For the 100th issue, we had some of our best-known contributors submit articles on anything they wanted.

GURPS Roleplayer Bundle (March 22, 2017; PDF)
Pyramid Classic Bundle (March 22, 2017; PDF)

With all 30 issues of Roleplayer magazine in the GURPS Roleplayer Bundle and the first 30 issues of the original printed Pyramid magazine in the Pyramid Classic Bundle, you can revisit GURPS' past to see where it all started and how it evolved.

Pyramid #3/101: Humor (March 23, 2017; PDF)

Humor in roleplaying is easy to do badly but very difficult to do well. This issue takes a shot at helping you do it better -- because even the most serious campaign can use some comic relief. (And don't worry, there are no clowns.)

Pyramid #3/102: Epic (April 20, 2017; PDF)

Sometimes subtlety is great, but sometimes it's fun to cut loose with the big, the loud, and the overpowered. This issue looks at exactly that, helping you crank your campaign to 11 without losing control over it.

GURPS Hot Spots: The Silk Road (May 11, 2017; PDF)

Matt Riggsby's third Hot Spots opus looks at the trade routes that brought goods and merchants from the Eastern Mediterranean to the center of China and back again, with a focus on the 2nd through 10th centuries A.D. (Now that's an epic campaign right there!)

Pyramid #3/103: Setbacks (May 18, 2017; PDF)

The essence of adventure is overcoming adversity. Well, here's a whole bunch of new adversity for adventurers to face. There are enemies to fight, of course, but machines can break, heroes can go nuts, and not every foe wants to settle things in combat.

GURPS Mars Attacks (June 8, 2017; PDF)

By popular demand, we got the rights to rerelease this hardback in PDF form. Grab it and get ready to invade Earth as a Martian. Or protect Earth from the Martians. Either way, it's all about the giant bugs, killer robots, mutants, and ray guns -- and it's a blast!

Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game News

This bonus section will show up until we've released everything below. It's separate from Upcoming Plans because nothing here is a secret -- we've already shared titles and other details with the world. Also, the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game, while based on GURPS, is its own game.

Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game (Boxed Set)
Dungeon Fantasy GM Screen (Printed Screen and Booklets)

Wow, this was a long haul! Work in earnest started in January 2016 and we finalized the files in April 2017. We were still putting finishing touches on the art and layout in the final weeks, but now both products are at the printer. They should be in shops by the autumn of 2017.

Dungeon Fantasy: Against the Rat-Men (PDF)
Dungeon Fantasy Magic Items (PDF)
Dungeon Fantasy Traps (PDF)

The three Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game stretch-goal items are all in the final, err, stretch. The PDFs are done and reviewed, and will be fully finalized by the time this update goes live. Oh, for those wondering about Against the Rat-Men: It's the second dungeon, which follows up the adventure in the box, I Smell a Rat.

Dungeon Fantasy Companion (Softback)

This add-on to the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game is a compilation of the three stretch-goal items above -- in print. It, too, will be finalized by the time you're reading this. It should be available via CreateSpace in the autumn of 2017, around the same time as the game itself.

Upcoming Plans

Here's what I can share about what else we're working on. Please remember that while we take our deadlines seriously, we aren't perfect and life happens: computers crash, people get sick, and so on. Nothing here has a precise date on it, and some of it might take a while to show up in future Recent Releases.

  • The GURPS Vehicles series will be PDF catalogs of ready-to-go vehicles (not a design system, which is still in the works). The first of these, by Phil Masters, is in production review.
  • A GURPS Dungeon Fantasy supplement by Matt Riggsby is in production. I really shouldn't give away too many details, but I will say that it's more on the adventure side than the abilities-and-stuff side.
  • The first GURPS Encounters project is in final-draft form and awaiting editing.
  • GURPS Tactical Shooting: Extreme Conditions, by Hans-Christian Vortisch, is in playtest. This follow-up to GURPS Tactical Shooting will tackle the difficulties of gunplay in less-than-ideal environments: desert, jungle, rocking ships, even outer space.
  • Bill Stoddard's latest supplement for GURPS Fantasy has passed its first-draft review and is on its way to playtesting.
  • Phil Masters' second installment in the new GURPS Steampunk series is also through first-draft review and on its way to playtesting.
  • PK is working on a new GURPS Monster Hunters volume when he isn't editing or reviewing other GURPS content.

There are several items even further out, which I ought to keep secret for now, but rest assured that we're keeping the ball rolling. For interim news, check out the GURPS thread in my blog, which I update every Friday.

How do we keep the ball rolling? We write some of this stuff ourselves, but even more of it comes from our loyal freelancers. If you're interested in working with us, the first step is to download and familiarize yourself with the GURPS formatting guide and GURPS WYSIWYG template. Then check out the Pyramid Wish List (updated March 24, 2017), Warehouse 23 Digital Wish List (updated June 1, 2017), and Warehouse 23 Wish List for GURPS (updated June 1, 2017).
